3 Things That I’ve Never Done On Any of My Previous Blogs

Today’s Live Broadcast was a fun one where I shared 3 (actually 4) things that I’ve never done before with a blog (but now I am with TentBlogger) and how it’s changing the way I’m developing the growth and success of it.

You’re going to want to review the broadcast (embedded above) for more detail, but I cover these things:

  • Focus on Design
  • Documentation
  • Content Architecture
  • Pacing Myself

In addition, I challenged the small group of listeners with two tasks for the remainder of the week:

Finally, I had some neat Q/A covering a few things like tags, categories, Michael Arrington, and more.

I’ve also added a simple banner at the top of the blog to promote the Live Broadcast:

Although I want to keep the Live Broadcasts intimate and small, I definitely can do a better job of promoting it, so thanks James for the push!

Adding this to my theme, for those interested, was as easy as uploading an image into the Standard Theme Framework (the WordPress Theme I use on this blog):

Standard Theme makes it easy! Just adding the widget now was all that it took:

  1. The Q&A was my fav part. However, it would be nice if you read the viewer’s question aloud before answering. That way those viewing the archived video (no chat) will understand the context.

  2. Hey John. I really loved being at the live event last night – I am glad that you have put the banner up – I guess that when I heard about the first livecast I was really dissapointed that I had missed out! Was definitely great to be there last night – will be putting next weeks event in the diary now!

  3. Really enjoyed the stream yesterday and so pleased I could stay for the whole thing (had to leave after 10 minutes of the first one).

Just wondering if you have a post planned on the RSS stuff you were discussing – was really intrigued by the importance of getting people to subscribe via RSS instead of relying on Twitter to advertise new posts.

Do you think it is as important for those of us currently not getting enough traffic to consider making money? It is the first step perhaps?

you can always consider it but i’m not sure everyone needs to be executing on it yet.

a lot of people shouldn’t actually.

  4. I missed the live feed this time, but enjoyed the video. Thanks for your thoughts on not obsessing over design. Think its an effective procrastination tool for me. Wanting to get something just so is a great way to avoid doing what I should really be doing…writing. And you are right; there are a ton of uber-successful blog out there that look awful. Lesson learned.

Fascinating info on architecture. Being a blogging newbie this is all new news to me. Will you be writing a post on this soon? (or have you already, and I’ve missed it?)

Challenge accepted. Working on disclosure statement today!

  5. Took you up on the offer and did my first video walk-thru. Never done one before. It was pretty fun, actually! James Brooks at I Heart Blogging has also been putting out some cool video walk-thrus.

So thanks for those challenges, John! They’re fun!
