I’ve been back and forth for a while with a standing desk and a typical sitting one and I’ll tell you that I still haven’t firmly landed anywhere – in fact, I’m still very comfortable with just experimenting with other options until I find that right fit.
Heck, it took me more than 5 years to find that perfect chair for my home office - it doesn’t surprise me that it’ll take me just as long, if not more so.
So, in my attempts for finding the dream desk I’ve decided to jump in and try the Bluelounge StudioDesk, a simple yet elegant solution that will certainly experience all that I will require of it!
For context, I’m using the larger XL version (59″) at home.
Shipping came in one giant box and 5 total parts – the desk and 4 legs. Very IKEA-ish in construction:

It did come with one small wrench but it didn’t come with a screwdriver. All good as I have plenty of those…!

Sorry for the somewhat fuzzy images as I took them in the evening in extremely low light.
As you can see the cord management is something that I’m already liking a lot – makes my desk (and the floor below) incredibly clean and clutter-free.
Desk space was also increased so I can have that central area to simply write and brainstorm – this is an essential part of my creative process and I was extremely cramped with my last solution.

I haven’t even put a full day of use into the system yet so I’ll reserve my thoughts for a bit later (as well as a few thoughts about the product being shipped… which has been interesting to say the least…) but I wanted to share with you guys my new solution.
Desk space is incredibly important and this will hopefully relieve some stress that I’ve had for a while about the way in which I go about “work.” I hope I have landed on a solution that’ll last me for quite some time – it wasn’t the cheapest experiment or investment but the return may be near-incalculable.
Everything for me starts in that little notebook you see in the middle of the desk (and now #Notes!) and the ideas expand eventually beyond the pages. But just as my mind needs the space to wander so does my hands, arms, and elbows. I can’t feel physically cramped just as I can’t feel mentally cramped about my work and endeavors.
My desk environment needs to accomodate that flexibility and range. I hope this one is it!
What desk solution are you currently using? What are the key ingredients on your priority list for the “perfect” desk? Love to hear your thoughts!

I have an Ikea Jerker v2 that is set up as a standing desk.
I also have a drafting chair simply because I can’t stand all the time without my ankles aching. The drafting chair’s height can be adjusted so that it’s at the right level with the desk. I usually alternate standing and sitting with this setup.
In the future, I’ll probably set up a treadmill desk.
A Drafting chair is an excellent idea for adjusting the height! I have chronic lower back pain so getting that height right is key.
And I love this desk. Clutter is definitley a silent energy-killer.
Thaks, John. Will take acloser look at this one.
I need something like this. Actually, I need a space in our house to call my own. Right now my “desk” is half of the dining room table after dinner. My keyboard, Macbook, mouse, etc sit in a bin in the corner and I have to unpack/repack when I do work or projects from home.
I’ve had my eye on this desk for a long time. Bluelounge products are great. I’m a huge fan of my Ikea Expedit desk but cable management is becoming a pain. I’m looking forward to a follow-up post after you’ve used it for a while.
I like the way the cables/cords are managed with this desk. I’ve got a GeekDesk (http://www.geekdesk.com/) and the cable management on it needs some work, but it offer the stand up capabilities which I really notice after sitting in a old crappy chair at work all day.
This looks pretty darn slick if you ask me but now that all three girls have their own rooms, my office no longer exists
Maybe the couch will work.
Very nice!!
I wish they shipped internationally! Looks awesome
John, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this after a month of use. I’m planning to go to the standing desk MO and am looking at this model based on your review above. Any follow up thoughts?
digging it. love it. my father loves it too… which is odd because he was never a big desk person….
