Your blog categories tell a story; namely a story about what you should blog about this coming year as you attempt to focus your content on your blog!
It’s quite reasonable to believe that the most sustainable type of content for your blog is the content that you blog about the most, right?
Sometimes the answer to your questions is right in front of your (blogging) eyes!

Personally I like to have a huge catalogue of categories I might like to use sometime in the future.
Just kidding.
Since I’ve only been blogging for 1-3 months (depending on how you look at it) I don’t have a lot of useful data. It’s still fun to prune and organize categories though.
yes, it’s also important.
I plan to pare down my categories for the coming year, for sure. I have 19 categories and I’m going to shoot for getting that down to about 6 or 7.

Great post John. I recently narrowed down my categories in an attempt to focus my content a bit more. It can be difficult, but it’s definitely worth the trouble if you want readers to be able to find the posts that will be most rewarding to them.
