Have You Ever Tried a Chemex?

December 3, 2011 — 22 Comments

I just received a Chemex Coffeemaker and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve been told about the legendary experience from more than a few people and I decided that I had to try it for myself. I am somewhat surprised that no one mentioned it here as an option in a previous post about Coffee Machines.

Perhaps they didn’t comment on the post…

I’ve got a 10 cup size and have seen some amazing videos and blog posts on how to “do” this right – apparently the net result of my findings is that it’s both an art and a science and you ultimately will have to determine the right mix for yourself.

I’m excited to try it out though!

This is one of the videos that I did find:

So have you tried a Chemex before? What’s your experience been?

  1. I think Google needs some caffeine:

It looks like we both lost all our Feedburner Subscribers:

Have you seen this happen before? Do we just wait it out?

  2. This is going to make an awesome Christmas present. I can’t name names because he/she might read this. hahaha. I Love the soldiers in the beginning of the video.

  3. I have one of these (surprise, surprise). It’s definitely a few steps up from a drip coffee maker. It’s fast and easy to clean up. It probably ranks third in my “tastiest ways to make coffee” list.

This is number one (in case you were wondering)

  4. Are you serious? Its just a glass jug with a paper filter? Seems like a bit of a luddite step backwards to me.

  5. I’m a huge fan of my french press, but I might have to try one of these things out. Where did you purchase it from?

  6. Old Queens Coffee Company sells the 8 cup Chemex (& their AMAZING coffee beans) online at http://shop.oqcoffee.com/collections/coffee-equipment. That’s where we got our Chemex.

I prefer it to a French press or a traditional drip. The combination of the “special” glass and the fine paper filter (cheap filters don’t work as well) really lets you taste the coffee like it was meant to be.

They also have step-by-step (non-video) instruction on how to use your Chemex at http://oqcoffee.com/coffees/chemex-brewing-guide/.

  7. I have. And honestly, I don’t get the hype. I prefer french press.

  8. Whoa, I’ve never heard of this. It seems like it would be interesting as kinda a novelty. I’d prefer the lazy man’s way of using my Keurig :)

  9. I’ve never tried it, but it seems very similar to the single cup pour over, which I am loving.
