Should I Have a Coffee Machine in My Home Office?

November 25, 2011 — 33 Comments

Yum.

As I continue to map out the perfect home office for a professional blogger I knew that it would only be a matter of time until I made a decision about caffeinated beverages.

You see, at this point I’m quite addicted and in love with coffee. Although I’m trying to reduce my intake by a bit I’m not sure that I’ll ever give it up; it provides a lot of personal pleasure and motivates me to write and engage in my work with interest and intensity.

You perhaps have some of the same feelings and sentiments? I hope more than a few of you say “Yes!” to that!

So, here’s the deal – I have two questions for you, the second question having value if you say “Yes” to the first:

  1. Should I have a coffee machine in my home office in addition to the one in my kitchen? Is it lame to have two of them? Love your thoughts!
  2. And… if I do end up having one in my home office, which one should it be? Should it be on of those fancy-shmancy Keurigs? Or something else? Love your thoughts here as well!

Difficult decisions, right?

Now I suppose you could ultimately argue that I’m just being lazy and/or fiscally irresponsible since I should have just one in the kitchen and be done with it but what fun would that be?

;)

  1. It seems that you are enjoying your office renovation process.
First you wrote about Sofa then Kitchen cum office and about Coffee machine…

Well I can’t provide any input as I don’t drink Tea or Coffee.
    I love only milk.

  2. The title of this post is amazing.

Yes. You should have a coffee machine in MY home office.

  3. Having a coffee machine is essential. Personally I love the manual ones where you grind the beans, tamp down the grinds in the portafilter and pull your own sweet shot of espresso. I’ve got an old Gaggia Classic which is great.

BUT, having a second one in the office as well as the kitchen is a little excessive. I wouldn’t see the benefit of both and you’ll probably end up drinking way too much coffee and spending loads more too! Stick with just one.

  4. Only having one may not be as financially responsible as it first appears. What about time wasted going to the kitchen and getting distracted by the dog, or the kids, or the wife, or… ?

If I worked at home and had a family I would definitely have a second coffee pot in my work area!

  5. Nah.

Just get a coffee machine that makes a pot of coffee into a thermal carafe. This keeps the coffee hot and fresh all day long (without baking it on a warmer), and is quicker to refill than waiting the 45 seconds for the Kurig to brew another cup. Time is money!

  6. I think one coffee machine is enough. Drinking too much coffee will be harmful to your health. Buy something else instead!

  7. I’m thinking about buying another keurig as well. I have an office in the basement with a separate exterior entrance and bathroom. It’s nice to be able to “go to work” and not come up until evening. It helps keep the boundaries. But right now, I still come up for lunch and coffee – I’m thinking about investing in a mini fridge and another keurig!

  8. I think ones enough. Plus, if you’re like me, you need to remember to take breaks. Going toward the kitchen every now and then is a good thing.

  9. I have a Keurig in my office, and I do love the convenience of just reaching over and brewing a cup of coffee. BUT, lately I’ve been making espresso instead, and I think that’s too messy and too much work to keep in the office (it needs to be emptied and washed every time), and I do enjoy actually taking a break to make my cuppa!

  10. I think that every home, home office, or office should have a nespresso machine. It makes the best coffee. You can check it out here, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00457KDRE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=kolbymilton-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B00457KDRE. I

  11. Firstly, I don’t know how in the world you made that rotating image. Freaking awesome.

Secondly, YES. Keurig all the way!

  12. As far as having a coffee machine in your home office, I would say that depends on how far away the kitchen actually is.

In my case, my home office is in the basement so I always have to head up stairs when I want a cup. Having a coffee maker in my office would certainly be more convenient, but I actually like the fact that I need to get up and move around.

The second piece here is that unless you decide to connect the machine directly to a water line (which will add significant cost), you will still need to get up for water when needed or at the very least grab water for a refill on your way to start your day.

If your in the market for a single serve coffer maker, I actually recommend the Flavia Fusion (and not just because I work for Mars). In my opinion the coffee is the best single serve on the market right now. The down side is all the ordering has to be done online.

  13. I agree with a coffee maker in your home office might be excessive. :)

My vote would be filling a thermal carafe and taking that into your office. I do something similiar, I have a very large thermal mug I use while I work. It lasts me for quite awhile and the coffee stays hot.

On the other hand, if you are considering the coffee maker in your kitchen will not do, you might as well go with the new one in your home office. :)

  14. I think you should have a larger, regular coffee machine in your kitchen. And then, you should get a French press for your home office.

Since you like the idea of moving around, and maybe not always working in your home office, it would enable you to make a great cup of coffee wherever you’re working at the time! =)

  15. Reading a bunch of the comments it seems a lot of people are saying don’t buy another. I’m also a coffee fanatic/addict haha, so I’m a little biased, but all in all I’d say GO FOR IT! Buy another. Why? cause its fun, and Starbucks just came out with their own k-cups!! #FTW

(seems like you posted this a month or so ago, what’d you decide on doing??)

  16. John, my wife and I have one (just one :) . It is a delonghi barista (starbucks used to sell them). One touch for espresso. One of best investments we’ve ever made – highly recommend one like this!
