Did You Make It? Did You Get Your $1.00?

January 1, 2011 — 68 Comments

Remember the challenge I posted a little more than a month and a half ago? I specifically challenged the community here to see if they could make $1.00 from their blog by the end of the calendar year!

I’d love to hear your experience:

  • Were you successful?
  • What did you learn?
  • What was the most challenging aspect of it?
  • What will you do differently?
  • What’s your next goal after making that first $1.00?

Love to hear your thoughts!

John

  1. lol. I wasn’t really trying to make some cheddar, but I did make $0.86 with Amazon Affiliates. So it wasn’t a total failure. I’m really hoping I get some Standard Theme Affiliate love. (sorry it just felt so right saying that)

  2. Here’s something that floored me. I am a full time author, but as I looked over my revenue from last year, nearly half of it came from my online presence (e books on how to write book proposals, audio retreats, selling my books directly from my site, mentoring writers at http://www.thewritingspa.com).

    This year, I’m doing more to increase that revenue stream, to be more deliberate, but that income is more reliable than writing income.

    I’ve made a lot more than a dollar, thankfully. And I’m proof that someone can LEARN to do this. I knew nothing about these things two years ago.

  3. Well it wasnt from my blog, but I made a few bucks from the Church IT which was awesome! :D

  4. I didn’t see your challenge (new to your blog — flew in via the Twitter bird tonight), but added my year earnings up tonight, and was so pleased it was a solid part time income. I only count cash in the bank, not earnings. Like you, I can’t believe I can make money doing this! It sure beats wearing a hair net or mining coal, right? (btw, if you’re wondering, I’m not logged in through my monetized blog. That one is FreelyEducate.com).

  5. Well, I didn’t start reading Tentblogger until Mid-December, so I didn’t even know about the challenge, but I’m sticking with advice I believe I read here and on Problogger to build a following before monetizing.

    Working on that, thus far, though I have signed up with some affiliates so I’m ready to do so when it’s time!

  6. Done and Done! Made $16 so far with the ol’ blog. Just put out my blog stats report showing all the income/traffic.

    Great start to a New Year!

    Tim

  7. I made $200 from ad placement on one of my blogs. They actually contacted me and asked for it. Pretty cool.

  8. I did not make any money directly from an advertisement on my blog.
    But since the post that you posted a while back I have made 7 affiliate sales, made several “consulting” calls that came because of my blog and got some money from the good folks at 8BIT for post.

    So I guess I met the challenge

  9. I made a whopping 34 cents! I made a few bucks here and there in earlier months, but not in December, despite having more visits and more posts.

  10. my goal was to hit $100 in 2010 with my blog since i was getting close when you originally posted this challenge. I think i did it, let me check the stats…

    AdSense – $59.31
    Amazon Affiliate – $66.57

    yup, $125! thanks for the challenge John.

  11. I made a few dollars in amazon.associates and google.adsense, and I got my first cold inquiry to advertise on my site – making a media kit for them now

  12. I believe my goal was to make $500. Here’s a rundown of what I did this year-

    Google AdSense – $106.00
    Podcast Advertising – $700.26
    Affiliate Sales – $456.35
    Guest blog posts – $56 (TY 8bit!)

    Total:$1318.61

    This doesn’t include a Q4 payment from some affiliate sales. I suspect that will come in around $200 but since the payment wasn’t received in 2010 I’ll use it to start towards next year’s goal of $2000.00

  13. Challenge Completed Successful!
    Goal $100
    Made $156.80

    Posted about it on my blog today. Check it out!

  14. Directly off my blog I made:

    $200 from Amazon affiliate links
    $275 from partner affiliate programs

    (rounded numbers)

  15. I wasn’t trying to make any money but I made $7.50 from affiliate sales with Craft & Vision. That was my first every sales of any kind & my blog isn’t a high traffic site (I will be working on that in 2011).

  16. Took the challenge of $1 and added the “+”. So the results are in… *drum roll*

    Affiliate Sales (Standard Theme) = $35.65
    Direct Ad Sales $10.00

    Grand Total of $45.65 for 2010!!

    I’m sure the IRS will be looking into my sudden boost in annual income. ;-) Seriously, hoping to see this increase in 2011 as I continue to build credibility with the community.

  17. Sold a Standard Theme!!! Booyah.

  18. I made $100 from a clover site referral. Transitioning into a Sr. Pastor position the last few months so hoping to pick up blogging again in 2011.

  19. Made slightly more than $1.00. :D

    Adbrite = $5.92
    AdEngage = $0.35
    AdsDaq = $3.32
    Bidvertiser = $0.41
    Clicksor = $0.06
    Infolinks = $5.29
    Kontera = $0.29
    Passive Income = $2.31
    Private Ads = $60.00
    Reviews = $1116.49
    Smowtion = $11.26
    TLA = $114.30
    TNX = $2.27
    Triviala = $47.97
    TradeDoubler = $1.12
    Traffic Revenue = $0.07
    Twitter = $45.40
    UnderDog = $7.10

    Total = $1423.93

  20. I have made $187 since august blogging. All of it has been through guest posting.

    I’m going to need to make more than that this year to justify the time I spend blogging.

    Seriously.

  21. I made about $4 through amazon affiliate sales in December.

    I also made a sale or two through comments on a site called tentblogger.com (you may have heard of it).

    Today I did a video tutorial in a blog post on how to use Google Chrome to test css changes and it has generated a little income already through people asking me to do work for them.

    I really wasn’t expecting that!

  22. I made some affiliate ca$h before you made the challenge, but alas, I earned a fat goose-egg afterwards. But, I think that I was trying to do too much with my personal blog, and have launched a new site this week with the understanding that my personal blog will probably never be monetized.

  23. John

    Haven’t made anything through my blog just yet. I have dabbled over the last few months, but really want to get serious with blogging this year. Thanks so much for making yourself available to spur us on! Not sure if you remember me or not, but we met at Drive10 during the tweetup. thanks again.

    2011 goal: Make $10 dollars in the next 3 months through my blog(s).

  24. I realized that jimmywrit.es isn’t focused enough for me to have a clue how to monetize it.

    • John Saddington January 7, 2011 at 10:18 AM

      that’s true. great name though… if you were an author perhaps…?

      • I’m going to keep it as a personal blog for now. I’ll consider monetizing it in the future if it gets any kind of following. I’m considering moving it to Tumblr, but that depends a lot on porting the theme.

  25. Made $17.36 last year with google adsense on three blogs (one of which I never posted on during the year…it actually made most of that).

    • John Saddington January 11, 2011 at 1:05 PM

      chris,

      sweet! great job! what’s your goal this year?

      • My wife and I have been focusing the last couple months on a blog that she wanted to start, and we’re planning on monetizing it in about a month. By the end of the year, we’d like to see it making around $100/month. Not sure if that’s realistic or not, but we’re doing everything we know to make it there!
