Sounds easy, right? Perhaps. But for many of us we need that extra push and explicit call to action and challenge that will move us from being a blogger that makes $0.00 to one that is making more than $0.00!
(Hopefully a lot more.)
So I challenge you to make $1.00 by the end of this calendar year!
Here are some suggestions and thoughts on getting started:

- Make sure you’re explicit with your acceptance of this challenge! Comment below and blog about it on your blog referencing this post! Let the world know that you’re going to “experiment”!
- Document what you’re doing and how much money you make! I’d love to hear stories January 1st about how you made $100.00 instead of just $1.00!
- I suggest taking a look at trying one of the many methods and opportunities I’ve laid out here on “Making Money Blogging” series.
Ready to accept my challenge? Comment below with your digital signature!
[If you already make a few dollars through your blog then you have to 'up' your game! Accept the challenge but increase the dollar figure amount. Go go go!]

I’m definitely in, but I’m pushing for $100 because so far this year I’ve made…hold on let me check…$38.54 with Adsense and $6.34 with Amazon. Hey, it’s a start!
Working on a product to sell as well, but not sure if that will be ready to go by the end of the year or not.
you’re in! going to check you on that jan 1st…..!
oh, and thanks for being transparent…! that goes A LONG way.
Accepted…
alvin,
great! you’re on!
Challenge Accepted!
I think I am going to shoot for the stars and go for $100. I have made made $62.55 through affiliates so far and $3.68 through Adsense.
That leaves me with $33.77 to go for the rest of the year. It’d possible…
Here we go!
you got it!
This is a brilliant idea. Exactly the push I need. Consider me in. I’ll do a post on my blog soon.
excellent! you’re in! consider yourself ‘accountable’ to it….!
I’ve got my post up now. Ready for the challenge! http://jdbentley.com/blogging/4-ways-ill-earn-money-from-my-blog/
sweet dude! that is great!
Thanks for the push John! I accept your challenge. 45 days until 1/1/11 to make $1 (or more)
Do you have examples of contracts with your advertisers? Or is there a mutual understanding of ad placement on your sites for a specified amount of time?
since i use beacon for a lot of sales it’s per month and they know that.
but, for my partnerships i have a few templates, which aren’t too sexy but get the job done. I use Freshbooks for a lot of this, btw.
Please share tips for beginners about ad pricing? Is it solely based on traffic? Or are there other factors to consider?
BTW: This challenge has been one of my favorite posts on Tentblogger. Not necessarily because of content, but because of the outcome for all of us. Thanks again!
dewitt,
I will do this soon.
Ditto to Terrin!
Challenge Accepted! queue “mortal kombat music intro”
I’ve made money off other blogs in the past, but never my personal blog. I usually look at it as the mental mind dump website. I’m trying to make it better and resourceful so I would love to make money off of it at some point. Why not start now right? BIG MONEY!
I have a few ideas I’m scheming to get it…
muahahha
the mortal kombat mention had me rolling.
You know what would be kinda cool, is if we all had the seesmic video response plugins, it would be fun to leave video comments for each other. Just a thought.
Video rawks.
video is neato.
Ok. I’ve thought about it long enough. This is the push I needed. I’m in! By January 1st it will $1+
DO IT!
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
terrin, word!
I accept your challenge. I like the idea of making money through the blog. Since I am a full time student, and a stay at home dad, this would be a good way for me to make a few extra bucks to help me pay for school.
full time student? where?
Hmmm…I’ve already made at least $300 off of affiliate sales this year and I’m expecting another $70 so I’ll see if I can get to $400!
wh00t! what’s your biggest sales area?
oh, and your podcasts are awesome. “self destruct”.
great blog over at the homeschool!
I would love to be included, but since I don’t have my self-hosted blog up and running yet, I’m making that my goal for 1-1-11.
OK!
I’m in. My goal on top of the $1 is to make enough to pay off one debt within the next 12 months. Primarily through affiliate marketing including the awesome Standard theme.
how much is “one” debt? just curious.
Accept.
dude. you’re in.
I guess I am in.
Just got into beacon ad network…that means I am starting to advertise now on my site.
still don’t know how I feel about it but will give it to the end of the year and see what has happened.
Was it difficult to get in to Beacon?
i do not know. i just submitted my site and they approved it. So I do not know what they use for approval and qualification
Thanks! I submitted my site too. Response was traffick too low.
I applied to Beacon a few months ago and was declined.
I applied again this month and was accepted. Just keep evaluating your site and keep looking for ways to increase the traffic. If you just keep getting material out there the traffic will come. Then you will able to get on with Beacon.
Good luck!
what is your traffic right now?
hmm.
congrats….?
I’m in to up the game. I already have made some significant $ off my blogging efforts (more indirect than direct) but always looking to up the game.
so…… what’s the goal?
I accept the challenge.
I have made $120 by guest posting for 8bit.io.
I got the check on November 1st and it was for 10 posts that I wrote in October. It was sweet and it was the first time I got paid for blogging.
For the challenge, I want to make at least $1 directly on my personal blog which is http://www.blaneyoung.com .
Here goes!
sweeeeeeeet! we’ve loved your contributions.
I’m in, John. But it’ll have to be for a more personal, non-business related site that I’m about to launch. It’ll give me some more motivation to launch sooner =)
sweet! love to see it.
I’ll let you know when it’s up =)
http://jimmywrit.es
oooh. look at that domain.
alright. i’m in.
here we go.
http://www.davidnormanblog.com/little-steps-to-a-big-step/
sweet!!
It would be great to be able to make at least enough to cover the cost of yearly hosting. I’m going to add some affiliate products, including Standard Theme which I just installed! In the future, I’d love to sell products (like an eBook) and/or premium content (like tutorials).
Baby steps!
seriously. start small, grow large.
Hi John!
I am a friend of Rick Smith’s, and he pointed me to your blog. I just started my blog on November 18th. I am pushing to be making money by January 1, 2011.
sweet! welcome. rick shared your site with me.
Cool! I know it is new, but if you have any advice then I’d love to hear your thoughts. You can send me an email to nate@debtfreestartups.com
i think you’re doing a great job of simply starting!
Just wanted to give an update. I was a little slow with challenge and didn’t put serious effort into making money until the start of 2011.
So far, I sold my first ad ($17.50) and made one affiliate sale for SoChurch ($2.76/month).
That’s a total of $20.26 for February! Sweetness!
thanks for the update……..! wow! that is awesome! thanks so much for the update on sochurch……!
It’s 2011. I’m in school (So blog on hold.), but, in the interest of doing something for my blogging, I’m going to take this challenge for this year. I will make money blogging, even if it’s only one dollar.
excellent!
Started “monetizing” my blog last month and have already made $7.43 Yay!
you are awesome! keep it up!
Challenge accepted!
I’ve made around 200$ thanks to my blog: I didn’t have any adds but I was asked to write articles about the topic I’m into (food) and I earned money, yeah;)
ps. I’ve spent all this money for new domain, WordPress hosting, professional theme, graphic and Vault Press .. so I’m poor again and need 1$ = challenge accepted:)
sweet! this challenge can be done again and again and again!
Challenge accepted!
how is the challenge going?
I love this post. Very motivating, actually.
I’ve started blogging relatively recently and the question I have is: how do you know when you have enough traffic to start looking into putting ads on the site? Is there a discrete number of unique visitors per day? I’ll look around for this info, but John definitely has me considering things.
