Are You Using the New Facebook Timeline?

December 25, 2011 — 21 Comments

I recently updated my personal Facebook profile page to the new-ish Facebook Timeline look and I’ll be honest, I’m actually liking it a lot better.

I’m digging the new “cover” portion at the top where you can personalize your visitor’s first impression with a larger image – I’m currently using an older image on a Macbook Pro that I had a few years ago and I’m trying to find a better picture but haven’t come up with it yet. I’ve seen some incredible examples of creative timeline covers and they’ve given me some great ideas for my own.

I’m also liking the very clean appearance overall with some of the most important information up top, where it should have been all the time! The right side navigation is convenient and gives one the nice ability to quickly go to a particular year of interest. This level of increased usability in my mind was a good decision and although I’ve seen some critical and negative remarks I’m really liking it a lot better.

Finally, the progressive loading timeline as you scroll down is a nice and elegant advancement as well as the persistent top navigation are nice touches and really complete all the UX that I was hoping would show up in Facebook.

Overall I’m a fan although one should note that I’m not a “power user” by any stretch of the imagination. What is your opinion of the newer Facebook Timeline look? Have you converted to it? What do you like and dislike? Love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I’ve set Timeline up on my personal profile but to be honest, I rarely use it. I only ever see it if I notice someone’s recently switched and I want to see what their’s looks like. For keeping up with the latest activity, I just use the activity feed where I can see exactly what I want (rather than all those annoying game announcements). So it’s a step up as far as UI goes; I just don’t really use it.

  2. I am using it and love it. I’m in a similar situation of using an artistic photo until I can find a better photo for either advertising or family.

  3. Just switched today. Kinda cool and I like it so far.

  4. I actually think it looks a lot better but I’m still not sure how I feel about The whole timeline feature.I find it strange that others can readily access things I posted when I was 17…

  5. I have switched to the new timeline. I am still getting used to it but I really do like it a lot. Once I set it up, I haven’t done anything to update it.

  6. I switched a few months ago thanks to some tips from another fellow blogger. I like it!

  7. I switched a couple of months ago. I like that I can highlight posts that I think are more important for others to see and delete or hide those that I find less important. I also like that I can add photos and information to any year all the way back to my birth.

  8. I have been using the new timetime and I like it. I think it was a change that I could approve of. :)

I loved looking at the creative things some people have done with the covers. Very cool!

  9. I switched a few months ago, however I was a little dismayed at how much information Facebook has saved on me.

I only got married at the end of 2009 but I’ve been a member of facebook since 2006, and I spent about 2 hours trying to remove comments and status updates involving me and previous relationships.

I haven’t heard from anyone else about this who is married or dating, but I’m wondering, what happens when your significant other doesn’t want to see posts in your timeline about your ex…

  10. I switched to timeline some few weeks ago and I really really love it. I’ve not been a great fan of facebook for sometime now. Google+ and twitter are top priorities for me because of the activity going on there. But timdline has brought me back and it makes me spend more time on my personal profile page rather than the wall.

  11. The other day I was reading about FB Timeline (for pages), and saw some guidelines that I didn’t know about…

I highly doubt Facebook will be enforcing these, but it’s good to at least be aware of.
