Do You Have a Gravatar? Get One!

Gravatars are sweet!

Lots of Gravatars!

[This post is part of the Ultimate Guide to Launching a WordPress-Powered Blog series. Check out the rest here!]

If you’re not familiar with Gravatars then here’s your intro! They are awesome and most simply they are pictures that represent you via comments and other creative uses (like profiles, etc).

The word “Gravatar” stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” and you can quickly sign-up and associate an image of yourself (or something else creative) with an email.

As you can see from the thumbnail to the right I have Gravatars for all the emails that I own and operate! You can go as crazy as you’d like with it!

But again, they are typically use in comments and I highly recommend getting one!

See how more attractive the comment section becomes on your blog when you can actually see the people who are commenting?

It makes a difference especially when you don't have one... sad!

Obviously it’s better with a face to a name, right?

So, show off your Gravatar in the comments! Also, if you’re not using your own picture then what was the inspiration for your current image?

Let me know!

I am pretty new to wordpress and the blogging world in general and I never thought it was a neccessary thing to create a gravatar for myself. I didn’t see the point. However this blog has put it in a different light and I feel as though I understand the reason for them now. Thanks

    • John Saddington January 18, 2011 at 11:47 PM #

sure thing leanna! love to see a face to name!

  5. Mutant Minds January 18, 2011 at 10:56 PM #

You don’t see my face, but it does convey my brand and trade mark.

And no, that is not my brain. :)

    • John Saddington January 18, 2011 at 11:46 PM #

Am I missing something or have I messed up? When I click on “Gravatar” it goes to: “This domain may be for sale”. Just checking!

I discovered Gravatar through a community blog I joined. It was totally awesome, and it’s true ‘global’ nature has impressed me since. And that’s me during last Halloween dressed as a thinned up Hurley.

That lotto ticket actually won. ($3)

    • John Saddington January 19, 2011 at 10:08 AM #

      sweet! ;)

  9. Khürt L Williams January 19, 2011 at 7:15 AM #

Yes, I’ve got a gravatar. Had one for quite a few years but I use an actual photograph instead of a cartoon.

    • John Saddington January 19, 2011 at 10:08 AM #

ah. nice. and. interesting “u” you got there in your name!

      • Khürt Williams January 19, 2011 at 3:44 PM #

Believe or not that is how my name is spelled. I wasn’t born in the United States.

        • John Saddington January 21, 2011 at 2:45 PM #

About a year ago I went with this pic of Little Lulu, my ‘ninja presence’ from mucho years ago. Sort of matches the -Before Starbucks- retro-perspective that I often incorporate in my blog posts.

    • John Saddington January 20, 2011 at 6:52 AM #

haha. love it. ninja presence… we all have a bit of that, don’t we?

  16. Cris Ferreira January 19, 2011 at 8:35 PM #

John, this is my gravatar. I especially like it because it was taken in Hollywood, CA in my last vacation (you can’t tell, but I was a few meters away from the Chinese Theater and the walk of fame). So everytime I look at it, I remember my great time in California.
For other people, well… it is just my face ;-)
    BTW, I live in Brazil.

    • John Saddington January 20, 2011 at 6:53 AM #

sweet! hello to you in brazil!

      haven’t been to hollywood… ever… i think!

  17. Jon Stem January 19, 2011 at 10:13 PM #

Mine’s just the ol’ mug! :)

    • John Saddington January 20, 2011 at 6:53 AM #

      so classy. :)

  18. Randy Kinnick January 19, 2011 at 10:30 PM #

Just had some headshots done. Will probably update my gravatar with one of those.

    • John Saddington January 20, 2011 at 6:53 AM #

      sweet!

  19. Rachel February 19, 2011 at 3:05 AM #

Hey John, I made a gravatar some time ago. What bugs me though is that it doesn’t ‘show’ every time I leave a comment. It seems to depend on the type of blog. Do you have any idea how to fix this? I usually log in for blogs with open ID through WordPress…I’d appreciate your help!

    • John Saddington February 22, 2011 at 7:23 PM #

ah. openID is a bit odd… and, it’s somewhat fallen out of grace with more and more people. i’m not a fan so I might suggest abandoning it.

This place is cool. I’m learning so much here. Thanks dude.

  21. Dave Dufour March 20, 2011 at 9:43 AM #

Ok. Here’s mine. Not sure if it works. Love this website. Was referred to this by Cliff Ravenscraft and Eric Fisher from the “Social Media Serenity” podcast.

  22. Dave Dufour March 20, 2011 at 10:48 AM #

Hmmm. I have a gravatar for this e-mail address. Can’t remember how to make it show up.

  23. Ryan Wakefield March 21, 2011 at 11:28 AM #

Thanks for the tips. I am wondering if you have suggestions on where you can get cartoon versions done. And also, where do you set your image so that it shows when you post?

  24. Graham April 21, 2011 at 5:53 PM #

John… I love how you’ve been referring people to this post in the comment sections of other posts when they don’t have one. I’ve thought about creating a post of my own similar to this explaining what a gravatar is so I can do the same. I won’t plagiarize. Just wanted to have a place on my blog for this information. Thoughts?

    • John Saddington April 21, 2011 at 5:53 PM #

no…….! totally plagiarize! it’s a great way to get people to know that you care for them! do it!

  25. Craig April 22, 2011 at 6:00 AM #

Thanks for all of these articles! I’m a brand new blogger (new to WordPress anyway), and you’re really given me some great material to get started with. And…here’s my Gravatar. :)

  26. Taryn Saunders May 6, 2011 at 1:25 AM #

Just set one up… question is… will it work?

  27. Tom Jamieson June 21, 2011 at 2:45 PM #

    VOILA!

  28. Jamie July 26, 2011 at 9:53 PM #

    I love Gravatar

  29. Andrew November 30, 2011 at 11:55 PM #

    Hey John,

What sort of pic would you recommend as a Gravatar?

  30. Rob Campbell December 23, 2011 at 11:29 AM #

Picture I took of myself at work, using the infrared camera in a small gimbal I designed.
