Gravatars are sweet!

Lots of Gravatars!

If you’re not familiar with Gravatars then here’s your intro! They are awesome and most simply they are pictures that represent you via comments and other creative uses (like profiles, etc).

The word “Gravatar” stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” and you can quickly sign-up and associate an image of yourself (or something else creative) with an email.

As you can see from the thumbnail to the right I have Gravatars for all the emails that I own and operate! You can go as crazy as you’d like with it!

But again, they are typically use in comments and I highly recommend getting one!

See how more attractive the comment section becomes on your blog when you can actually see the people who are commenting?

It makes a difference especially when you don't have one... sad!

Obviously it’s better with a face to a name, right?

So, show off your Gravatar in the comments! Also, if you’re not using your own picture then what was the inspiration for your current image?

Let me know!

  1. Here’s my trusty gravatar.

  2. Haha! That is awesome!
I’m “on the map” now. :)

  3. Et Voila!

    It’s a great idea!

  4. I am pretty new to wordpress and the blogging world in general and I never thought it was a neccessary thing to create a gravatar for myself. I didn’t see the point. However this blog has put it in a different light and I feel as though I understand the reason for them now. Thanks

  5. You don’t see my face, but it does convey my brand and trade mark.

And no, that is not my brain. :)

  6. Am I missing something or have I messed up? When I click on “Gravatar” it goes to: “This domain may be for sale”. Just checking!

  7. I discovered Gravatar through a community blog I joined. It was totally awesome, and it’s true ‘global’ nature has impressed me since. And that’s me during last Halloween dressed as a thinned up Hurley.

That lotto ticket actually won. ($3)

  8. Yes, I’ve got a gravatar. Had one for quite a few years but I use an actual photograph instead of a cartoon.

  9. Is that really your daughter or just an advert cleverly placed? Makes you think :)

  10. Look! I’m drinking espresso!!!!!

  11. Let’s see if this works….

  12. About a year ago I went with this pic of Little Lulu, my ‘ninja presence’ from mucho years ago. Sort of matches the -Before Starbucks- retro-perspective that I often incorporate in my blog posts.

  13. John, this is my gravatar. I especially like it because it was taken in Hollywood, CA in my last vacation (you can’t tell, but I was a few meters away from the Chinese Theater and the walk of fame). So everytime I look at it, I remember my great time in California.
For other people, well… it is just my face ;-)
    BTW, I live in Brazil.

  14. Mine’s just the ol’ mug! :)

  15. Just had some headshots done. Will probably update my gravatar with one of those.

  16. Hey John, I made a gravatar some time ago. What bugs me though is that it doesn’t ‘show’ every time I leave a comment. It seems to depend on the type of blog. Do you have any idea how to fix this? I usually log in for blogs with open ID through WordPress…I’d appreciate your help!

  17. This place is cool. I’m learning so much here. Thanks dude.

  18. Ok. Here’s mine. Not sure if it works. Love this website. Was referred to this by Cliff Ravenscraft and Eric Fisher from the “Social Media Serenity” podcast.

  19. Hmmm. I have a gravatar for this e-mail address. Can’t remember how to make it show up.

  20. Thanks for the tips. I am wondering if you have suggestions on where you can get cartoon versions done. And also, where do you set your image so that it shows when you post?

  21. John… I love how you’ve been referring people to this post in the comment sections of other posts when they don’t have one. I’ve thought about creating a post of my own similar to this explaining what a gravatar is so I can do the same. I won’t plagiarize. Just wanted to have a place on my blog for this information. Thoughts?

  22. Thanks for all of these articles! I’m a brand new blogger (new to WordPress anyway), and you’re really given me some great material to get started with. And…here’s my Gravatar. :)

  23. Just set one up… question is… will it work?

  24. I love Gravatar

  25. Hey John,

What sort of pic would you recommend as a Gravatar?

  26. Picture I took of myself at work, using the infrared camera in a small gimbal I designed.

  27. Testing…testing…is this thing on?
