Steve Jobs: Do You Truly Love What You Do?

I really like this very short video with Steve Jobs talking about passion and truly loving what you do. I especially like the rationale that it’s ultimately about perseverance – and that any sane person would quit (and probably should quit or get fired) if they don’t love what they do.

In terms of your blog, do you truly enjoy your time writing and blogging? If not you probably won’t make it long-term which isn’t a bad thing necessarily but the point is not to be confused, jaded, or disillusioned that you’re going to be doing it 10 years from now.

In fact, it might be better to concentrate on things that really get you going instead of spending time in areas that might be simply a weakness.

This is the last day of the calendar year in 2011 – make it count by not repeating the same boring things next year!

  1. Just like the old saying says, “Find something you LOVE doing, and you’ll never “work” a day in your life”

I guess if it were that easy, everybody would be doing it right?

  2. So true. Excited to get back to doing even more of what I love in 2012!

This also reminds me of a pro photographer who teaches other photographers… he says if you can do anything else instead of photography, go do that because it’s so darn hard. Unless you’re passionate about it and don’t have any other options, you won’t continue and won’t succeed.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Sadly, I’m in the ‘not doing what I love’ boat. In 2012 I will jump ship, start the fully employed MBA program at UCLA, and create more of what I LOVE. Thanks for the great year of posts John. I’m looking forward to what you have in store for 2012. Happy New Year!

  4. This “love what you do” applies after the 1-st million I guess ;) .

  5. Found your blog this week as I began researching the idea of starting a new blog. Just wanted to say thank you for your *many* and thorough articles. They feel like just the kind of hand-holding I need as I continue to think/plan what this should look like.

I’ve blogged to please myself for years now, and want to learn how to make that help others, too. And create income. Folks like you indicate that’s not an impossible alchemy, and I appreciate the encouragement.

  6. I agree with Steve’s viewpoint because one is destined to not persevere if a person is doing something that they’re not passionate about anyway. Blogging is something that I feel a strong connection with. It allows me to express myself and communicate with others who share the same viewpoints as me. When you’re doing something that you’re passionate about it will not feel like work, rather a leisure activity.
