How Professional Bloggers Make Money, How to Make Money Blogging

Have to pay for that coffee somehow...
Over the course of this week I’m going to be writing a series of posts that simply list out the various (and exciting!) different ways that bloggers make money.
These techniques and strategies are used by both the casual blogger (or TentBlogger) and the Professional Blogger alike, so you will probably learn a thing or two.
Most importantly, you’ll begin to naturally brainstorm on how to begin executing on some of them yourself!
Remember that a blogger is never necessarily limited to these particular ways of executing on these strategies and techniques and that the more creative, focused, and dedicated you are to your craft the better your results and return, for both you, your community, and your partner organizations.
10 Ways that a Blogger Makes Money:
Here is the list (that’ll grow over the next week or two) of strategic ways that bloggers make money:
- Direct Advertising Sales
- Advertising Networks
- Affiliate Marketing
- Paid Reviews, Sponsored Posts
- Blog Networks, Guest and Paid Posting
- Selling Products, Merchandise, and Expertise
- Big Business and Corporate Blogging
- Services and Business Development
- Premium Content, Auxiliary Sites, Donations, and More
- The Art and Science of Diversification
I’ll be linking the related posts each day as I finish writing them.
Do you have any specific questions and/or insights? Love to hear them in the comments!

Can’t wait John. I really like this new venture of yours, it’s inspired me to change up some things, and start some new things.
Keep it up.
sure thing lance! this is pretty darn fun, huh?
I totally agree Lance! Right now I’m thinking through how I can use blogging to supplement a portion of my income (or all of it!) thus freeing me up to do more of what I love!
Looking forward to reading the upcoming tips. Today I added some ad spaces to my blog, going to see if anything happens. This will be my first step to making money through blogging.
cool! i’d probably just show 2 on the sidebar instead of 4. make it not look so bare…
Thamks for the tip!
Loving this blog, thanks for all your work, John!
thanks kyle! it is a lot of work, but it’s good and fun work.
I’ve added another ad on my blog that might make me some money! So now the ‘standardtheme’ and cloversites aren’t the only thing making me money anymore! Hoping to add more ads soon.
Looking forward to your reading about your other strategies!
graham,
looks sweet! thanks for representing 8bit so much!
I’m a part-time blogger (you know, I post one every blue moon and start with “Sorry I haven’t posted for so long!”) so I’ll probably never make money off blogging… And yet, I’m still interested in what you have to say about it. One more for Google Reader!
Thanks, Phil, for pointing me to this one. John, give him a cookie
sure thing eric!
you’d be surprised… there’s an entire culture of bloggers who don’t blog much… and do quite well.
Eric, my advice would be to stop apologizing for blogging so little. Those that are reading your stuff don’t care that you don’t frequently post. Just give them great content, unapologetically.
i agree with this adam.
A very timely series. I’ve been wondering about this for the last little while. Can’t wait to hear your insight. Thanks, John!
sure thing larry! got any questions, ask them in the comments!
Is the persona an indicator for the bloggers direct ad success?
not sure i follow exactly. can you expand your question?
I was reflecting on the post you linked to about casual blogging. Does the type of personality a blog presents add to its success?
it definitely could impact it’s “success” but then again, you have to determine what “success” is first, right?
if it’s about making money, then a casual blogger probably won’t make nearly as much as a niche blogger, etc.
Yay
my favorite post. Cant wait to read it all. I feel like hugging you! Too cool.
a digi-hug will do.
I dig-hugged you in this video:

dude. thanks! haha. love the music.
brilliant – I need to make my blogs self sufficient. I don’t suppose successful advertising will help fund cameras and film projects?
imagine that
yes. make that a goal. that your blog will produce some income for some new toys.
i do.
Income for new toys would be Sweet!
that’s what i’m talking about.!
