Incoming Blog Migration!

September 13, 2011 — 10 Comments

I’ve been working non-stop for the past five days on discussing, strategizing, and building an execution plan for the imminent migration from a terrible hosting provider. Yes, I’ve made good on my word and we’re going to ditch the… … …

In the last three days I’ve begun executing against that strategy and doing significant tests, optimization, tuning, and ultimately DNS and data migration and management.

Whew. It’s been a pretty intense few days and I’ll be glad for it to be over. There are only a handful of sites to migrate and then we’ll be able to shut things down completely (and forever) over at VPS.net.

One of the larger challenges has been making time for the migration for this growing community since we’re definitely a world-wide team of passionate bloggers who are connecting, discussing, commenting, and joining in conversations on our forum at all times of the day!

When? Early… 2:00am Early!

As such, there’s no easy solution in terms of the “right” time as to when to migrate but I ultimately have to choose one – and so it’ll be happening tonight (or tomorrow morning rather), September 14th at 2:00am EDT.

If you happen to be up then just watch my Twitter stream @TentBlogger for updates and perhaps you can test it for me as I move things around.

If not, hopefully you’ll wake up tomorrow full of rest and energy with a nicer, faster, and more reliable blog!

Three cheers to that for sure! See you guys on the other side! Naturally I’ll share more detail about where we moved shortly after things settle down (and I get some rest)!

    First of all… good luck!
Second… September 14th, 2:00am EDT it’s gonna be September 14th 9am in Romania, so I’ll be online. Let me know if I can help you in any way!

  2. Awesome! Are you going to shed some light on who you’re going with soon?

  3. Good luck! I’ll be on here first thing tomorrow to test it all out!

  4. If you didn’t have the problems with VPS.net that you experienced, would you consider this new solution far superior to the VPS.net setup you had?

    • yes, as the previous post stated this gives me another opportunity to test out some new environments and configurations… and so far it’s a lot better. love trying new things! i could have done this (perhaps) on vps.net but their service is too terrible to consider doing anything on with reliability.

  5. Hopefully you’re move goes smoothly, seems that I am commenting here and it is not too long now until the move, will be checking out the updates, and hoping it all goes well!

  6. Hope this works out better for you.

  7. Hey John, looks like the migration went pretty well. Having moved to new servers myself a few times over the years I know how big a job it can be, so congrats on getting that done!

I’m sure you’re crazy busy right now testing and catching up on things you couldn’t do during the migration, but I’d be curious to hear if this has changed your perspective on hosting providers. This is not a knock on you in any way, but your post about recommended blog hosts – http://tentblogger.com/blog-hosting/ – is a very popular one. I assume you had your previous host highly rated on that list and that’s probably changed now. So, I’m curious as to whether this has changed your thoughts on how to evaluate a host or the value of service or anything like that.

  8. Looks like things are working well this morning :)
