A Professional Blogger’s Home Office – Part 3 – Wall Color?

[This is part of the Problogger Home Office Series.]

I’ve already asked you for ideas about my future office desk for a problogger and showed you the general state of things (for a while, I’m afraid) but my wife and I were talking about wall color for the office because I’m just not sure if yellow is my color.

Do you have any thoughts around wall color? It need to provide creative energy but can’t make me mad (like the color red).

Love your thoughts! If you’ve got a picture of your current office wall color (or wall paper – does anyone do that anymore?) I’d love to see it!

Just for comparison’s sake you’ll see mine above.

  1. Hey John – I don’t have a color to inspire you but I do have a link to a post on WebUrbanist that might give some inspiration… http://ichr.ch/3t Hope it helps!!

  2. I tend to prefer soft earthtones on the wall in the office, with small accents added elsewhere for little splashes of color. My office right now is pale yellow and I can’t wait to get rid of it!

  3. You could break the yellow up with a bit of fun – my vote would go for http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/e8a1/ :)

  4. I always have thought comics are very great as wall-decor. http://jarederickson.com/2009/the-inner-geek-in-my-office/

Although it could be a little distracting to your blogging. A 9×15 mural would be great as something to put on the wal to add some color.

  5. I would do the squares just like the photo you posted… looks very… 8Bit.

  6. I find something clean and streamlined creates energy. If the wall colour isn’t too bold, it allows you to focus on your work. I’m using a lot of gray with my clients right now, if you add white trim, it creates a very fresh, clean look. Of course bright accents can be used to jazz up the space.
Usually in design, we pick everything for our clients first – furniture, art, rugs, etc. then paint is the last to select. As there are 3,000 colours available, paint is easy to select. It’s the final piece of the puzzle to tie everything together.
And yes, to answer your question wallpaper is back and bigger than ever!

  7. Oh, gosh, even if wallpaper’s coming back – I would never inflict wallpaper on myself. It’s such a…commitment. Then again, we always seem to choose houses with 70s-era wallpaper that refuses to part with the wall.

Y’all have a really cute house, from what I have seen in the videos. I am confused as to why you’re blocking the glass-door cabinet next to the fireplace with your desk (maybe I am seeing that incorrectly?) It seems like you’re giving up some elegant storage space right there.

For colors, I am all about green right now – maybe a light, warm green? Of course, I like the yellow that’s currently on your walls.

    Have fun!

    • ah, dorian, i think you may have missed the previous video sharing that that is a temporary location and the room is a mess! i’ll have more on this later… but it’s just temp!

  8. Hey man – I am good friends with Austin Lee. I am an artist and creative consultant and custom paintings. I do color consultations for a lot of people. I would love to help you pick a color and show you variations of the color that might work best based on color theory principles and all other colors that are visible in and from the room. It can make the difference from an cool space to a space that invokes emotion and creativity – as well as make people really respond to the space as well. I can help you with the basics for free if you are interested because Austin speaks very highly of you and I have enjoyed your site as well. Its been a help to me and my blog as I start off.

  9. That totally depends on your personality. Bright colors make me tense, warmer tones and muted colors help me relax and think. But I have a creative & very extroverted girlfriend that needs a bright red wall in every room to feel energize. If you are amore like me, there a lots of yellows to play with or maybe a soft blue would work for you.

  10. My office wall is currently green….

If you decide to go the wall paper route. Consider a mural that can be changed as often as you like. Here’s a link- http://www.muralsyourway.com/create-your-own/

  12. Hello John, in Italy we do not have wallpapers and most walls are white so instead of sending you a picture of my wall, I’ll send you my whole home-office from my post Writers’Rooms: http://evaulian-thebestoftheworst.blogspot.com/2008/05/95-writers-rooms.html

If anyone is interested in the meaning of colours or why we choose a colour, here’s an explanation from another post. Thanks for asking. http://evaulian-thebestoftheworst.blogspot.com/2011/01/244-language-of-colours.html

  13. hi,

I always loved rooms with 3 walls one colour and the other a similar colour. Something like 3 light creamy brown walls and the other a chocolate brown.

Any variation works really, and I’ve seen this in a few houses and in some interior decoration things.

Dude keep it simple and easy in the eyes. Too much stimulation will lead to distraction and not enough stimulation will make you want to work elsewhere. Start by making a list of colors which you enjoy. Pick something which either energizes you or calms you (based on your desire) for me it was a calming color. Ao I choose a blue-grey tone. Looked sharp and to spice thing up I added photos in black frames to for me variety. You need things in the office to ground you when you startup stray because of stress, or jatbkak of focus. :-)

  15. Hi John – this might inspire you. Awesome and it works: http://www.thespiritualfengshui.com/feng-shui-color.php

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers …

  16. Yellow has been very inspiring for me but I would also tell you I’m not a yellow guy. You won’t see it specifically but this is three colors of yellow in a faux finish.

  17. Just a lil’ info re: wallpaper/murals. If anyone is going to wallpaper please use ‘sizing’. This is a clear ‘paint’ that goes on bare or painted walls, it dries, then you wallpaper overtop of it. In the future if you want to remove the wallpaper – it comes off VERY easily because of the sizing. When people struggle with wallpaper removal – it’s because there was no sizing underneath. This also applies to murals and is a life saver!

  18. Have you ever checked out ikeahackers.net? I used that blog to design our new place from scratch (since we just moved to Greece with nothing but clothes 4 months ago ;) ) You could go with a low key wall color and then use some comic books, mod podge them on some thick picture frames, and you have all of the awesome colors without being over stimulated. That’s what I did in my living room/church meeting room (we have a home fellowship at our house). It worked out better than I thought. http://spencersabroad.blogspot.com/2011/06/photo-tour.html

  19. I think a soft earthy green would be a good color for a blogger’s work room. Something not too bright (like a yellow or red) but still light enough to keep the room feeling open and well lit

  20. Did you already choose a color? I would go with a light, cheery green.

  21. I prefer choosing light colors. The mural prints looks great on your wall. We are on the same taste when choosing colors.
