Just wanted to give you a small update on how things are continue to progress in quest for the most-awesome home office. In fact, that update is merely this: It’s slow-going.
Cleaning up after a move is painfully boring and a lot of work. I’ve got tons of books that I finally just threw up onto a bunch of old shelves that we brought with us with no rhyme nor reason. I hate doing that but it’s just a necessary evil as I clean out space.
The office is more of a dumping ground for trash that needs to eventually go out to the street. Good times, right?
I’m not upset – I just know that it’s going to take some time for this to really come together. I’ve got a laundry list of important things that need my attention greater than my perfect work environment so I’ll just have to practice the fine art of being patient (which is pretty difficult for me).
It is what it is, right?

Trash above and books below. We’ll slowly get there!

At least I can see the chimney area. I can’t wait to use those built-ins.

A very temporary setup. I can’t remember specifically where my wife got that standing mat – it’s not great but it’ll do for now and it was cheap.
And, at least I have my Yoga Mat back!

Eventually I’ll have some old original french doors restored and put back in this doorway – until then I’m open to all the “elements,” like my hurricane-daughter Roenne and the sounds of my hungry 5-month old Arden.

We’ll get there!
Thanks for hanging with me and hope you guys have a great rest of the week!
Question: What are you waiting on right now? How are you practicing the fine art of patience?

I am being patient with my domain name. I had one all picked out, yet when I added it to my cart I saw that it was certainly available… as a “Premium Domain” to the tune of $1788 smackers. Very frustrated, but I am not rushing out and buying every domain name that pops in my head. I am waiting until I get just the right one while I am still creating my blog plan and some starting content.
wow. mind if you share what it is?
I had the same thing happen to me for a band name I wanted to use (The Prodigals). The price is over $2k! I guess it’s good because it means you’re thinking along the right track in terms of keywords, and maybe while you wait you could also save some $$ in case the next one is perfect so you can get it.
If you find a premium domain available, can you really afford to pass it up? If your goal is to eventually make a profit off your blog, that’s a pretty good place to start.
… i’ve spent 5 figures on a domain name before.
yeah…..
Just like anything else…you have to spend money to make money.
eh. haven’t earned that back yet….
Wowzers!
yeah…
Um….wow. The domain names I choose are always about $10 LOL! Guess that’s why blogging isn’t paying my bills?
I spy a pull-up bar!
yup… trying! #p90x…!
did you p90x the boxes into the bookcase?
hahah.
nope… on my macbook air…!
John, you’re making great progress… moving is HORRIBLE. The ‘stuff’ just seems to grow in some counter-intuitive way. By the way, love the wood floors there in the house.
We are currently waiting on our house to sell… We are moving this week so I hope it happens sooner than later.
ah… man. that’s a tough spot… my heart hurts for those that are trying to sell right now…!
It really stinks. the market is so down in our area… We may be sitting on it for a while. Really do not want the responsibility of renting, but it may have to come to that…
where are you located?
Birmingham, AL
ah… and where are you headed?
Dothan, AL
ah, staying in state.
be thinking about you today.
Hey I used to live in Dothan and then Eufaula! (I didn’t like it but it was way culture shockish to me)
eufaula… that’s an interesting word. how do you pronounce that…..
You-Fall-Uh
Just a suggestion, did you ever think about painting the brick? If you paint it the same as the built ins, it would provide great flow and really open up the space. I would suggest using a high heat resistant BBQ white paint. Would look FAB and very inexpensive to do! I do it for clients all the time.
Just my two cents.
jil,
thanks for this idea… i didn’t even really think about it.
It’s looking good John
Moving isn’t always the most fun activity, but when you DO get everything finished, it feels sooo nice! As for patience, sorry not any better than you are at it, but pray, pray, pray. That’s what I tell myself. God bless!
thanks kristin! moving is the suck…!
but, we’re glad we’re here.
Be encouraged man!
Waiting on a trip to Oklahoma City next month. So ready for it!
ah. why are you headed over there?
Love the comic book figurines!! Best addition to the room.
seriously. :0
Love getting the voyeur’s eye view into people’s creative space so thanks for the update and I hope you do more as things get settled.
Dolls! Wives just don’t understand *sobs*
… i know. seriously.
Sweet dude! Keep plugging away, you’re on your way to an office the rivals Google
haha! i hope so… or… i think so…
I’m right there with you man. We moved all our crap into the basement when we moved in about 2 1/2 years ago, and I’m still trying to clear out enough space to build an office someday. Slowly but surely…
That’s a nice looking pad John! Hey , at least it looks like you can walk around a bit…
When we moved, we had so many boxes jammed in there, we had to come through the back door to get down our hallway!
I feel your pain!
it’s starting to clear up… it was a mess (and still is) in a lot of the other rooms.
How’s the standing up desk trial going?
ugh. my feet hurt badly right now.
Lookin good John. I hear ya… it just takes time to get everything organized. The more and more I spend time at home working on things internet-related that aren’t a part of my day job… the more I realize I really need a home office. The one-bedroom apartment deal is really getting old. Hopefully that will be changing soon(ish).
… what about when you get married? aren’t you just going to wait til then?
Actually we might be moving into my mom’s basement for a bit to save some money. Rent for a 750sq. ft. apartment in the Chicagoland area is about $900/mo. and I am thinking that for the next year, before the wedding, we could save that money and use it for a down payment on a house. I’d much rather be paying that money each month towards a mortgage than towards rent.
But yes… after the wedding… we’re going to hopefully be buying a house.
…
good luck with that!
