Look mom...! No more scrolling!
Ever been frustrated by having to scroll through your Categories just before you publish a blog post? I know I have!
Sometimes I spend way too much time finding that sub-category hidden beneath a bunch of other categories and all I want to do is publish the darn thing!
And if you’re using WordPress as a CMS-like solution for your website and/or your clients then you know by experience how many categories (and sub-categories, and sub-sub-sub-sub-categories) they might have, right?
In some instances it takes longer to find your categories than to write your content!
Wow. That’s just not right!
Well, here’s a very simple solution: Show All Post Categories WordPress Plugin!
Pretty simple concept really, right?
Here’s what the official description says:
This plugin does one very simple thing and yet can change the way you blog by saving you tons of time: It shows all your categories in the blog post editing screen in WordPress.
No more scrolling to find that missing category! This is especially helpful if you’ve got a number of sub-categories as well.
My hope is that you can use this to increase your level of productivity while decreasing the amount of headaches and small annoyances of publishing that post!

Seriously... no more scrolling! Yay!
Why? Because the world needs your awesome content! Let’s lower the barrier of publishing, shall we?
I use this on every single blog that I run as well as many of my clients who have tons of categories (good for CMS-implementations especially).
Enjoy, and don’t forget to check out all the other WordPress Plugins as well as WordPress Themes I’ve released so far!
Have a happy day of publishing!

John, you are a scrolling finger saver.
My right pointer/scrolling finger thanks you so much. Keep it up with the awesome plugins.
sure thing!
That’s a lot of categories….
for you…..? yikes!
haha yup – I have 5
Interesting…
Are you going to do a post on how to name your categories?
I’m with the crowd who suggest that fewer categories is better…
I’d love to hear your take on it1
i’ve said it many times before that fewer categories the better… unless you’ve architected your site really well…!
8-10 is what i recommend.
as you can see, i have 10 right now http://tentblogger.com/sitemap/ … i hope to trim this though.
I’m trying to stick to 5.
It’s tough though!
it seriously is! good job though!
I currently have 11 (12 if you count uncatagorized, which I don’t use) but I’m phasing 2 of them out to another site (family and photography) so I can focus on my main content. I have 3-4 that tend to overlap a lot but they seem distinct to me: spiritual growth and personal growth. Any ideas on how to combine these and give it a name that will convey both?
growth?
Simple. And I overlooked that. Thanks!
sure thing man!
It’s the little things that make a big difference. Thanks for creating this awesome plugin, John.
sure thing creative!
This is by far the best and most useful plugin for getting rid of that stupid categories tag in the URL.
Just like CreativeBlogger said, it’s the little things. And this little thing adds up. Thank you very much for this.
sure thing! not a problem.
I guess I just don’t have the many categories…
which is actually a good thing!
That’s exactly what I need. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with WordPress 3.1.1.
it should totally work. i’m using it now.
Thanks for your fast reply. Does it even work with 300+ categories?
yes.
I’m sorry, it was my fault as I missed some renamings. Thank you very much for your effort!
By the way, it could be useful to change the Dashboard layout to only one column in order to get even the long categories displayed without many line breaks.
good thought.
… because line breaks could mess up the category hierarchy a little bit.
also, make sure you get a gravatar: http://tentblogger.com/gravatar/
Dear John,
there is a burning issue to me, which is actually off-topic. But maybe you could answer my question regarding category permalinks, though. Do you know a way to use the same slug multiple times for different sub-categories?
example.com/car/red/
example.com/motorcycle/red/
Have a good weekend!
Kind regards
Nick
sounds like you need a category / tag combo of architecting information. or, put in a master category called “color” and then you can put your post as a car and color/red, motorcycle and color/red (categories).
Thanks for your reply.
These were only examples. My goal is actually to have different sub-categories with same slugs only differ in their superior category, like in other CMS.
sweet! thanks nick.
Sweet? Thanks for what? Did you reply to the wrong comment?
huh… … not sure… !
Since WP updated to 3.5, I can’t seem to get this to work… Any suggestions?
hmm. i’ll have to check.
