This is a quick vlog post with some thoughts about your advertising efforts which are especially relevant if you’re just getting into advertising on your blog.

If you’ve been finding yourself exceptionally frustrated, upset, or way-too-confused for your own good, then perhaps you need to take a step back and jump back into advertising at a later time.

The opportunity to advertise on your website is always available, but the time to develop amazing content and community is not and every moment you waste being frustrated over monetization is a moment that you can’t get back.

Let's not get to this point.

In fact, I believe that jumping into advertising much later down the line, especially if you’re just starting to blog, will prove to be more profitable long-term. You will execute better and more strategically simply because you know your blog and blog community better.

Have fun with your blogging efforts (I share this explicitly here) and if you’re not having fun monetizing then take a break!

  1. John,

So… I inspired a vlog… haha! Thanks for addressing the frustration factor – I know you’re right. I am having a blast with the blog itself – but the advertising is a drag and distracts me from the mission behind the blog anyway – so, I’m going to continue cranking out those scheduled posts – which is my “happy place” – let the content build up and address the ad space later.

  2. Hmm I think my problem is that I’m frustrated by the thought of it ;-)

I haven’t made any serious attempt to monetize any of my properties mostly because that kind of detail work gives me some anxiety.

Maybe I’ll make a goal to buckle down and really go after it this week… then next week when I’m frustrated I can take a step back ;-)

  3. Yep, that’s my strategy. Concentrate on content and monetize as the time is right and partnerships are established.

  4. Healthy perspective! Also, I find it’s good to let your obstacles sometimes lead the way. What I mean is: analyze the process and source of my frustration. I push “pause” and let things marinate for a while and then start playing with it again with new found awareness from just sitting with the problem. Obstacles don’t have to be road blocks, but can be reliable road maps if we give them enough time, and read them right.
