A bunch of people have asked me for my thoughts on video blogging and some of the tools that I use. I share all of that in 5 minute video embedded above.
For those that are scanning, here are a few tidbits that I talk about in the video:

Broadcasting to the airwaves...
- I’m not a professional video blogger or vlogger. It’s apparent as you can hear some background noise and some fuzziness even in this video post (sorry!).
- I use Quicktime on the Mac OSX for my video recordings. I am looking for a more robust system (perhaps a real camera) but right now I’m quite happy with the native app that’s already installed.
- My suggestions for getting started? Just get started! Period!
- I like both YouTube and Vimeo! You can’t go wrong with either.
- Here are some of the reasons why I think it’s a good thing to do some video: Authenticity!
- I use Screenflow for screencaptures.
- Keep it practical.
- Keep it personal.
- Always present a challenge to your audience!
- And don’t forget to have fun!
Hope that helps!

Thanks John for sharing your thoughts! For me it’s just getting started. I’ve done some test videos. I agree about keeping it practical having having fun. I hope to post my first video blog soon!
Thanks again,
let me know whenit’s up!
ScreenFlow is also terrific for camera recording, too. The negative? You can’t see yourself while recording like you can with QuickTime or iMovie.
Gracias! Your posts are always – ALWAYS – worthwhile. I aspire to your brilliance, sir!
you’re right, that’s true!
A minor correction: YouTube does allow longer videos than 15 minutes. I have no limit on my account.

hmm.
I think video blogging is good, you can also get traffic from youtube and vimeo through videos, just make sure to have a summary of what’s going on in your video so you still have google content.
btw did you hire someone to make the cartoon images for your site, that’s pretty awesome looking stuff.
I’ve thought about doing videos for some announcements. I did one a couple years ago when I gave up my birthday for charity: water. That was fun. I’d be doing them the same way you’re doing them… with quicktime. Nothing fancy… I like to keep it simple as well.
sweet! rock it!
John, is there a post on how to use the LIVE theme for video. how do u use it do a live session with mac. I did email the sales team for more info, not sure if they got it. Thanks.
i’ll double check to see if they got it. sales@8bit.io, right?
Hey John! I am new to blogging and loving all of your tips!! I have been playing with videos around 3 months now, and I have a channel set up on youtube of about 12-15 videos. Do you use BOTH Vimeo and YouTube? I didn’t know if it reached more people that way or just seemed spammy. I’d love to know you’re thoughts! Typically my videos are me talking or showing a workout program if that matters to what channel you’d recommend.
some people try to be all over the place… my thoughst are to just choose one and stick with it.
